Connaught History
In 1884, with a population of 10,000, the Town of Calgary was incorporation and in 1905 Connaught was officially established as a neighbourhood. Named after Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, son of Queen Victoria, the community in the early years was home to prominent Calgarians including Nellie McClung, Patrick Burns and James Lougheed. In 1891 Senator James Lougheed, one of Calgary’s most influential citizens, built a grand Victorian sandstone prairie mansion for his family. Lougheed House, as it's called today, still stands and is now a National and Provincial Historic Site. In additional to beautiful century homes, Connaught grew to include parks, impressive churches, sandstone schools, low-rise apartments and condominium towers.
