It’s a seller’s market in Calgary which means new home buyers are often making quick decisions about a home purchase. As a new home buyer you may think your child is automatically accepted into the designated school in the community but that may not be the case.
According to the Calgary Board of Education a number of CBE schools can no longer accommodate all the students designated to them, due to a significant growth in the school-age population. Parents should phone the designated school for the community they are considering buying in and confirm if there is available space in the 2014-2015 school year.
The CBE has set criteria it uses to for acceptance.
- Students residing within the walk zone who have a sibling attending the school (see individual school profile pages for maps)
- Students living outside the walk zone who have a sibling in the school OR students living within the walk zone who do not have a sibling in the school
- All other students living in the designated community.
When a Calgary Board of Education school is at capacity it is using a lottery process. To be included in the lottery, applications must be received by the lottery deadline. If is a student is unsuccessful in the lottery they are designated to the overflow school.
Particular schools in Calgary that are more likely to be at capacity are:
- Battalion Park
- Cambrian Heights School
- Cranston School
- Edgemont School
- Dalhousie School
- Le Roi Daniels School
- McKenzie Towne School
- Olympic Heights School
- Panorama Hills School
- Tuscany School
- Simon Fraser School
It was announced earlier this year that the CBE would add 6 new schools to Calgary, in some of Calgary’s fastest growing communities which will allow about 7,600 more students to attend classes close to where they live.
New CBE Calgary schools schedule to open September 2016 are:
- Auburn Bay Elementary School (K-4)
- Evergreen Middle School (5-8)
- McKenzie Towne Middle School (5-8)
- Panorama Hills Elementary School (K-4)
- Tuscany Elementary School (K-4)
