Schedule A CallBankview, Calgary History
Bankview was originally open countryside owned by William and Isabella Nimmons who called their spread the 3-D-Bar Ranch. Nimmons built a beautiful two-storey Queen Anne Revival-style house on the ranch in 1898 (the house is a heritage building and still stands off 14th Street SW today). In the early 1900s, Calgary experienced an economic boom, and in response Nimmons began dividing his ranch and selling the parcels to new settlers. In addition to their role as pioneer ranchers, the Nimmons established a quarry and brickworks on their Bankview ranch which supplied sandstone for many of Calgary's famous buildings including Lougheed House, Carnegie Library, and many early schools.
With Calgary's city limits bulging, the City annexed all the remaining 3-D-Bar Ranch land in 1907 and formally established the community of Bankview. Following annexation, the City of Calgary removed all the old names in Bankview and converted the land into a traditional grid system with numbered Streets (running north-south) and Avenues (running east-west). When the grid system failed to match up with other sections of the city, the solution was to impose the occasional "A" or "B" streets. Drive through Bankview and you will find 14A Street, 16A Street, 17A Street, 18A Street and 19A Street.
Bankview experienced another wave of redevelopment in the 1970s. A booming City of Calgary, saw greater urban sprawl and the need for higher density housing within the inner-city. Developers jumped at Bankview, and the community saw a significant increase in apartment buildings and small walk-ups. Over the last few years, the community has once again experienced redevelopment with high end luxury builders taking advantage of Bankview's proximity to downtown Calgary and opportunity for fantastic city views.
